Thornhill Nick-Names
by Scoutmaster Billy S

I have been asked many times why so many people in Thornhill have nick-names.  I did not think it was any more commonplace there than any part of town, but my opinion has recently changed.

Our old Thornhill scoutmaster, Mr. Cecil, recently passed away and I saw many of his Scouts and some of my old friends.  We talked about old times and yes, many old names were brought up and stories told.

I'll list some of the printable nick-names from those stories the order depending on where they lived in Thornhill, starting at the old American Legion on out Holmes Street to Dailey Avenue, then street by street to the top of Thornhill.

Here goes:  Snook, Beep, Bubbles, Chopper, Chicken Hawk, Digger, Flipper, Blue, Juney, Moe, Munk, Crockett, Dusty, Yogi, Wild Bill, White Owl, Smitty, Indian, Buck, Big Red, Little Red (not to be confused with Red on the Head), Tootie, Corky, Porky, Goose, Buckie, Trump, Gippy, P.G., Pete-Eye, Dewsy, Dunor, Fish, Jasper, Stinky, Buck Buchanon, Big Lew, Scrooge, Butch (on Swigert), Buck Wheat, Frog, Pickles, Coach, Apples, Duck, Duby, Mouse, Clickers, J.B. (Jelly Belly), Coon, Thumper, Booger, Butch (on Blackburn), Jug, Beaver, Tuffy, Odell and Koala Bear, West to east, bottom to top.

Most of these people have outgrown their nick-names.  A few have not.

I can think of only one occasion where someone took offense at being called by a nick-name.  Tootie didn't like being called "Red on the Head."

I also know for a fact that six good frogs (punches) on the pitching arm equal the pain of one old-time tetanus shot.

Sure hope Tootie doesn't read this.
