FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK

Rev. Elvyn Hamilton

Anthony "Tony" Robbins is an American self-help author and success coach. Robbins’ faith in God has impacted his life and career. Perhaps, one of his more famous quotes is “If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten.”

Therefore, it seems that if we want different results, we might try a new approach. Sometimes, what we think is a new approach is something that has been tried many times before. One of those things is fasting. Fasting is traditionally thought of as abstaining from food in a religious observance. As we have had discussions in our Church about the topic, many have indicated an interest in the Church attempting this collectively.

To some this may be new, but fasting is mentioned throughout the Bible. It was also a regular part of the life of John Wesley. Moses fasted for 40 days and nights as he sought God. Jesus also fasted prior to beginning his earthly ministry. Jesus also indicated a presumption that fasting would be a part of life for his followers.

How can we fast together as a Church? We will be having a “Healing Service” on Sunday, September 19th during our regular 11 am service. This will be a time of praise, prayer, and celebration of our God. For those who desire, we will have a special time of intercessory prayer. Feel free to invite persons for whom you have been praying.

I am calling the Church to fast and pray from Friday evening on September 17th after your evening meal until your evening meal on Saturday, September 18th as we approach our Sunday service. Do not receive this as pressure, but do as you feel led by God. Also, consult your doctor if you have any health concerns. We do ask you to pray as apart of our commitment to support the Church. If you can’t forsake food for this time, consider forsaking something else to focus on God and prayer.
