We got Morgan at a petstore in Lexington at an adoption day. The people there were really nice, and let us take her inside to check out the cats because that was our one stipulation--she had to tolerate cats. The adoption process was very simple and quick, and the staff was very caring and kind. We were told that Morgan had been found under a truck with a litter of rottie mix puppies and that kids had been mean to her. She already knew "sit" and knew that the end of the bed was for sleeping on, so we're sure she'd had an indoor home at one time. She's gone through two obedience courses and she did great. She just lives to please and is so happy all the time. She happily accepts hugs, kisses and cookies from our toddler.

Bonnie was picked up by Lawrenceburg animal control hanging around one of the local schools after getting a call from a concerned citizen who was afraid she might be hit by a school bus. The caller then contacted a possible foster parent for Bonnie. Upon getting to her foster home, she was found to be in very poor health. She was shy and needed a family willing to help her bond and be patient with her. We had been trying to adopt a Pyrenees for a long time, but it kept falling through for one reason or another until finally we found Bonnie. Bonnie made the long trip to New Hampshire and she came over to me right away, as if it was meant to be. Bonnie, who is now named Molly, is a very sweet girl who is quite happy in her new home with her "brother", an 11 year old Lhasa and 2 cats, and everywhere we go people stop to ask what breed Molly is and to comment on how beautiful she is!

Sarah, now called Sasha, was adopted by a family with two children. The kids, ages 4 and 7 LOVE their new doggie! Sasha loves to chew on rawhide bones, play hide-and-seek, and cuddle with her family. She sleeps with her human mom every night and is a great companion for the whole family. She has quickly become quite protective of her human family and makes an excellent guard dog. When outside, Sasha frequently chases birds, greets other dogs, and basks in the sun. Sasha was quite a sight when adopted, with thick, matted and dirty fur, but now, after two good groomings, is a fabulous-looking forever friend!

Aunt Bea was probably at least 12 years old when this beautiful old chocolate lab found herself being dumped by previous owners at a local shelter. The shelter knew that no one would adopt an old, overweight, graying lab with arthritis, but they didn't want to see her euthanized. So she went to Holly's Place for foster care . She quickly made friends with another old lab in foster care and we have pictures of her actually "spooning" with Molly, her paws around her neck, sleeping. She protected Molly and was at her side until the end. Now, she has other interesting relationships with the younger dogs in foster care. She attempts to give them direction regarding what is allowed and what isn't. Despite her occasional reprimands, they all love her and go to her side when they are ready for a nap. It is not unusual to find Beatrice asleep with another dog or even a cat curled up in her belly. Everyone seems to love "Aunt" Bea.

Big Boy was brought to the local shelter as a stray, but it's obvious that he was someone's dog once upon a time. At 8-10 years of age, Big Boy now has a new lease on life. Big Boy loves playing fetch and other games with his two young friends when they come home from school. And Big Boy found a home on a farm and has two kids of his own to play fetch with.

How did I come to adopt Josie out of all the others on Petfinder and in my own shelter (in Indiana)? Her face is the face of an ANGEL. I fell for her immediately! She has a similar look to a wonderful dog that I had to have put to sleep due to cancer. It was love at first sight when I saw that mug. However, it was really the absolute love and admiration that the shelter staff had for her. When I found out that she had been there so long and that you all were so wanting to find a good match for her I knew that it was meant to be. Your caring words really sealed the deal. I am so happy that it all worked out and that she has come home to me. I love her!! Her two GSD brothers love her and so does her new sister...most of the time!!

I volunteer with Almost Home Dachshund Rescue Society and someone posted Andy to our group email. Sue Carter, our one and only Kentucky member, picked him up from your shelter and decided to keep him due to his age. Well I was going to foster two Dachshunds from Iowa and they were being transported to me. Their last stop before me was in KY with Sue, she agreed to keep them until I could get them from her. I was talking to her and telling her how my husband really likes seniors and she jokingly said, "maybe I should send Andy along." I told her I would take him in a heartbeat, she asked me if I was kidding and I told her no and asked if she was kidding and she said no. She said he wasn't any trouble, but she has 12 other dogs and Andy got picked on alot and didn't get much attention. I have three other Doxies and a Boston terrier of my own, so I said I would gladly adopt Andy from her. So when I got the two fosters from Iowa from her, I also got Andy. He has become a permanent member of my family.
Shane and I wanted to get a dog, and I went to the Anderson Shelter on Saturday while Shane was working. All of the other dogs were barking their heads off, but Bailey just sat there with the most pitiful expression on his face. It was love at first sight. I knew I wanted him in my life. I brought Shane back to meet him, and the decision was made. The only problem was- Bailey was a stray and had to undergo the waiting period before we could adopt him. I went through complete separation anxiety for an entire week. Finally, we get the call! On March 15, 2000, we came down, and Bailey was named before the ink was dry! Gerome and Lee were great throughout the entire process! They were very informative and patient. We still take Bailey for a visit from time to time. Bailey loves rides in the car, playing Frisbee, avoiding Higgins (one of our cats LOVES Bailey and won't leave him alone), having his butt scratched, and chasing the red dot from the laser pen (we're always careful of his eyes). This dog needs a 12 step program for his obsession with the light pen. Bailey has brought such joy and laughter to our family. He is the most caring and loving animal and I absolutely love him to pieces. Bailey is now seven and is getting the typical Golden gray muzzle. It breaks my heart to think about him getting older and something happening to him. I do know that my life is much richer with him being in it and I will always be truly grateful.

Our family came to your shelter one February day. We had fallen in love with a beautiful little red pup (#122 Simba). This little guy had been in your shelter for a while. We decided that he reminded us of Humphrey Bogart. So with that we took him home and gave him a new name. He is now affectionately called Bogie. He is a wonderful pup. Bogie has become a close companion to my two sons and our lab pup. I just wanted to say thanks for keeping him in wonderful condition and giving a chance to be blessed with him. He thinks he is the guardian of my three year old and protects him from all harm (such as going in the back yard, birds and of course at time the other pup). Here are some pictures of Bogie and his gal pal Libby.

We found Fred out by our church where he had been staying for a few weeks, and we decided to take him in. Over a years time, we felt that Fred could use someone to keep him company when we were at work. We really wanted to find the perfect friend for him and watched for something to jump out at us. We were hoping to find a friend for him that was close to his age and that he would truly enjoy. One day, my wife saw Callie online and she just knew that she was the one. We scheduled a time to bring Fred in to interact with her and they got along great. At first Callie was very shy towards men, but she has since come around more and has recently started to come out to play with me. She used to hide anytime she saw me by hiding under our shed. She likes to play at night with Fred where they romp around and callie likes to dig. She is great and I'm glad we could help to find her a good home. She is a great addition to the family.

My husband and I were looking for a playmate for our mixed beagle named boomer. A female dog that was younger, and quite active to keep up with him. We didnt find anything down here at the shelters and decided one day to look at petfinder.com and see what dogs there were. I came across Abby in the Anderson Humane Society and immediately inquired her. After several brief emails finding out more information about, we drove over 2 hours to go and see her. We ended up adopting her that same day and took her home where we could spoil her rotten. She has been with us since August of 2004 and has been a wonderful asset to our family. She has in that time met my mothers cat and dog, my sisters cats and been traveling all over with us. Boomer loved playing with her and chasing her all over the house and yard. She is loving every minute of it, she has so many friends and playmates in the family. Sadly, boomer was put to sleep over a month ago and she was in bad shape but with the love and attention we gave her, she became strong willed again and very very active. We just recently adopted another dog, who she gets along with great. We love abby with everything we have, and would not give her up for anything. She is always wagging her tail, following us around, playing ball, licking us and being as great a dog as she can be. She sleeps in my bed everynight when my husband is at work and faces the door protecting me. She's always happy, its like she is one of us, she thinks shes human as well (probably because we spoil her) The greatest thing you could give a pet, is love and a great home. Thank You Anderson Humane Society for a wonderful, beautiful and special gift.....Abby.

Finally I am able to send you photos of our new puppy, Peyton. As I think I mentioned to you, when we asked the vet what kind of dog he was, he answered, "the four-legged kind." The vet believes he is at the very least a mix of terrier and Chihuahua. He's a true lap dog, but still has all the spunk of a puppy. Just to prove how sharp his teeth are, he chewed up one of my good shoes last night. Ah, this too shall pass--we hope! He does hate it when we leave for work in the morning and tries to hide from us. The funniest thing he did was to go under our sofa and tear out part of the ticking which covers the bottom. He then crawled up inside the ticking where he had formed his own hammock. Eventually the ticking tore and we had to remove the hammock. It's still his favorite hiding spot, though.

I found Moose's mom on Petfinder and had originally came to adopt her when Moose PICKED me. He came to the fence of the little pen and just sat down to look at me. His brother and sister weren't too interested but I loved his coloring and once I picked him up, I knew he was it. I really understood how good he was when I gave him a bath before his scheduled neuter visit. He was so still in the tub! Anyway, he is still the lazy bum I met months ago. Thanks! Davy Ann Green
My husband and I just recently adopted Lucy, a beagle/dachshund mix, after finding her on petfinder.com. She has been such a joy. Lucy has already enjoyed several trips to Pet Smart because I had to keep buying her a smaller collar. None of the dog collars fit our small pup so we had to purchase a ferret collar for her. Third time's a charm! We have spoiled her with lots of new dog toys, too. Lucy is doing so well in her new home. She is very playful during the day and cuddles with us in the evening. Lucy is already responding to her name and just has those cute little puppy dog eyes. She already knows how to sit and we are teaching her to "give us paw". She is doing exceptionally well. I especially love it when she is playing and then runs to one of us with one of her new dog toys. She is a wonderful!! -Karen & Jimmy
I was browsing Petfinder at work one day when I found Jeta. I knew she would be a perfect fit in my house, and I applied to adopt her right then. From the first minute we had her, she was the most affectionate, trusting dog I could have hoped for. Unfortunately, she had some medical problems that had gone undetected and untreated for some time. During the fall after she came to live with me, her bladder and kidney troubles landed her at the vet for a week. They weren't sure she would make it, but after a surgery to remove a (shocking) number of stones from her bladder, she bounced back as if she'd never been sick at all. Now, she eats a prescription diet, but her energy and sweetness make it hard to believe she ever had any trouble. Without Petfinder, Jeta might not have found a family to help her, and we wouldn't have this completely wonderful little dog.
Lady is adjusting well to her new home and it living the life. She had a few issues when we first got her with her ears and skin, but those are all cleared up and she's feeling much better. We are working on getting her housebroken. She only has a few accidents in the house now, but we are still working to get that under control. She is also attending obedience training in a few weeks. She's just adorable and brings so much goofiness into our house. When she first got here a month ago she was very bashful. You would have never known there was a dog in the house; however, over the next few weeks her true personality came shining through. She does well with other dogs and has been around cats (and she could care less about them, so I really question the "cat killer" statement the previous owners claimed. They are crazy!). She loves to run in the backyard with my friends black Lab, Lucy. Lucy and Lacey are the best of buddies, but Lacey really is a speedy girl and runs circles around poor Lucy! The cutest thing about Lacey is how she loves to bring us presents - our shoes! When she gets really excited to see us she runs and gets our shoes and brings them to us as a "present". She is also very cute when she wants to go out for a walk. She will run and get her leash and bring it to us with her tail just wagging back and forth! Thank you so much for taking care of her and for not putting her down. She is just a gorgeous dog and people are just amazed that anyone wanted to give her up - let alone put her to sleep.
Mr. Puff came to my work (Glo-Marr Pet Store) to find a new home. It's the shelters new way of finding homes for kitties. After 3 weeks no one was adopting Puff. Everyday I spent my 10 minute breaks with Puff. He is the most loving cat I have ever had the pleasure to have in my life. On Nov. 9th I adopted him. He's been an invaluable member of our family ever sense. I cannot fathom why anyone would pass him up. He's perfect around my child. And OK, not so perfect around my dog...lol. But they are working it out. Thanks AHS for bringing Puff into my life!
Just wanted to let you know Frisky is doing well! We adopted Frisky from Anderson Humane Society about 3 weeks ago. We just love her. We changed her name to Hammy, because she reminds us of the hyperactive squirrel from the movie "Over the Hedge". She already knows her name very well. As long as we give her plenty of exercise, she behaves very well. She is sitting quietly beside me right now. Attached is a picture of Hammy sitting nicely on her bed. Thanks so much for the work you do at the shelter!

When we started looking for a new kitty I wanted to get one that would mesh with my 2 peek-a-poos (Jack and Mikey), 1 cat (Ebony) and 2 daughters. The girls and I picked Sammy out when he was a few weeks old and had to wait 3 long weeks for him. He had 2 brothers that were also adorable but Sammy licked my daughters nose and started purring and she didn't want to leave him. The transition was so easy, you could tell he was already used to playing and being held. I don't think he walked for the first few days, the girls carried him everywhere. My dogs and cat just ignored him until he made them deal with him. He doesn't let anyone ignore him for long. He loves to play and has lots of energy, but when he gets tired he drops right where he is and sleeps. He averages 6-8 naps a day and still manages to sleep most of the night. He has a cat tree that he runs up on it to turn the room light on and then runs down it to turn it off. He is 14 lbs now and the whole tree shakes when he runs at it full force. I also have 2 large cat perches and you never know who will be sleeping where. Just like kids, Sammy only wants to sleep on the one that Ebony is using, but he has been an absolute dream. The only exception is he eats ponytail holders and small toys, but after his surgery to retrieve those he now brings them to me to put up.
We have wanted a St. Bernard for a long time, but they can be hard to find! We found Cleo on the Petfinder.com website, and made the drive from Terre Haute, Indiana, to come see her. We fell in love with Cleo, and decided to adopt her! Poor Cleo was in sad shape when we got her. Her old family hadn't taken care of her coat in awhile. It was too matted to save, so she got shaved down a couple of days after coming to Terre Haute. Now her fur is starting to grow in really prettily! Cleo has been a wonderful dog so far. We are so happy to have gotten her. She is a gentle giant. She loves to sleep on the couch during the day, and is very fond of the gourmet dog cookies we get at our local pet store. She gets along with our kids, Michael and Maggie, and she loves to play with her new doggie brother and sister: Spike (a dachshund/sharpei mix) and Molly (a border collie mix). In July we took all three in to Petco to get their pictures taken. That was an adventure! Thank you for rescuing Cleo so we could adopt her!

Sincerely,
Linda & Michael Vicory
Hannah has settled in really well and is very happy to take all of her brother's squeaky toys. Her brother wasn't too sure of her at first, but he has adjusted well and has realized that he now has a playmate. While they are not best friends yet, I am sure that it won't be long before they are. They love to chase each other in the back yard and they also love to fight over above mentioned squeaky toys! Last night I even caught them giving each other kisses.

My husband loves her and gets quite a laugh at her puppy antics. She already has him wrapped around her little paw! She gets whatever she wants when he is home.

She saw our vet last week and he said that everything looked good. Today she got vaccinated, so now we will be able to take her to the pet stores and on walks around the neighborhood. Everyone at the vet loves her: she is such a people person (and a ham!).

So all in all, the adjustment has gone pretty well. We can't wait to watch her grow up and become an integral part of our family. I've attached a picture of her with one of her (and by her I mean her brother's) favorite squeaky toys.

Thank you for this little gem.

We adopted Reno about a month ago after our lab passed away. My wife has always wanted a Great Dane so she searched for adoption agencies. She came across Reno and she fell in love. We drove 2.5 hours to get him and he is fitting into the family quite well. My boys love playing with him as much as he likes playing with them. He also likes lounging on the couches and taking walks. One of his favorite toys is a Scooby-Doo stuffed animal we gave him. Our first Christmass with him will be a blast. We both appreciate giving us the opportunity to take Reno home with us.

We will love Reno always,
Kyle and Lisa

Shelly (Loula) is doing great. She is the sweetest dog, and really well-behaved. We just took her to visit some friends in St. Louis who have young children plus a Golden Retriever, and she did
fantastic. She loves playing with other dogs, and was super around the kids. Loula and our cat hit it off quickly, and there hasn't been a problem at all. She had a few accidents in the house initially, but other than that we couldn't have imagined a better dog. I cannot believe how lucky we are to have her.

Thank you so much,

Eva, Michael and Loula (Shelly)

Although we drove roughly an hour and half to get Braxton. We could not have asked for a better dog. We take Braxton everywhere with us, he is very polite and full of manners. He sits, gives paw, and hugs on command. He is very sweet and loving. He also was still potty trained, with no accidents a month later. Braxton was the perfect addition to our family. Thank you! We will be getting family pictures with him next month, we will definitely send a picture!
Hello. I adopted Taffy from your shelter in October and thought you might enjoy a follow-up pic. She recently completed obedience and pet therapy training (for home-bound hospice patients). Taffy does double duty as my fishing and hiking partner. I wish more people would visit a shelter before contacting breeders, given how many truly good dogs need homes. Thanks again for helping make Taffy part of our family.

Hi, my name is Paquita and I'm a 2 year old Chihuahua. My mommy found me on Petfinder about 6 weeks ago. After applying to learn more about me, she visited the Anderson Humane Society one night to check me out. I've not always had a lot of love in my life, so when she came I was shivering and growling at her. I could tell she was a nice lady so I decided to let her hold me. She took me home that night and I was introduced to my new brother, an 8 month old kitten, and sister, an 8 month old German shepherd mix. Mommy rescued both of them from Petfinder in the Fall. I love playing with my brother and am slowly warming up to my sister. She weighs a lot and is so much bigger than me. I'm only 8 pounds and she's over 50! Since I've been with Mommy, I have a new wardrobe and love my clothes. I get tons of toys and treats. I get to go to the dog park and play--mostly bark--with lots of dogs. Most importantly I know that I have a home forever now and love my quiet time with Mommy. Thanks Petfinder!
I adopted Levi, a yellow lab mix, from the shelter in December 2005 after seeing an ad for him on Petfinder.com. He was a gift for my husband who was just coming home from a deployment in Iraq with the United States Army. I inquired about Levi and immediately the staff at the Anderson County Shelter encouraged me to fill out an adoption application. I was approved and the adoption process was so easy and enjoyable. Soon I found myself with a puppy more wonderful than I could imagine. Levi very quickly became my loyal best friend and he just loved attention. He already knew how to sit and sort of walk on a leash. Best of all he was already house broken!!! He is very smart and has been extremely easy to train. He loves to play fetch and squeak his squeaky toys incessantly. He is such a wonderful dog, I can't imagine how I got along so many years without him. He is so smart and loyal. I would reccomend adopting from the Anderson County Shelter. The staff was wonderful and they take extremely great care of their animals. I could not be happier with the puppy I got from the shelter.

We are so happy that Maggie was a match for us! We stopped on the way home and got an extra large crate and dog bed for her to sleep in at night, until she is house trained. Just in the time we spent getting in and out of the truck on the way home, she is really doing well on the leash now. She just needed a little encouragement! I think she's really glad to finally have "people"! She's asleep in the living room by Jack's feet, even as we speak... and the kitty doesn't mind her at all. Thank you so much for the wonderful things you do!
We adopted Chip from your shelter and he is an absolute joy! We renamed him Sammy and he learned his new name right away. He is such a sweet, loving and gentle dog and has fit right in with our family. Bella, our other dog, and Sammy became friends almost instantly, they played and chewed on raw hide bones most of his first night home. All three of my children just adore him. Sammy seems to have developed a special attachment to my middle son, Logan, and the feeling
is mutual! Thank you so much for the ease of adopting him and for all of the great work that you do at your shelter. He has found his new home and all of us (Including Sammy) couldn't be happier!
I adopted Ralphie (Kodi) on August 28th and wanted to send some pictures to let you know he is doing great and we’re very happy to have him join our family! He does have a thing for shoes. He loves sleeping in the bed and snuggling up close to you.
