The Franklin County Republican Executive Committee is pleased to share with you our newsletter. While this is the first, we hope to continue bringing you the news and events of our party with emphasis on the local and state levels.
Considering the number of registered Republicans is growing rapidly, this is a monumental undertaking. Included in this issue, you'll find our new officers, an introduction to Republican candidates, and other news as well.

State Representative: Joe Walters of Versailles, is running for Representative against Democrat Joe Barrows. Joe will be representing seven precincts in Franklin County, six in Fayette, and all of Woodford. He is owner and operator of The Cruise Shop, a Lexington travel agency. In 1995, he served as the Chairman of the Woodford Forgy/Handy Campaign and was recently elected as the Chairman of the Woodford County Republican Party.
Sixth District Congressman: This May, we'll chose one of three outstanding individuals to beat Scotty Baesler in November.
Dr. Ernest Fletcher of Lexington, is State Representative for Fayette County. He is a graduate of the UK College of Medicine and is a family physician at Saint Joseph Family Medical. Fletcher is also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he served as fighter pilot obtaining the rank of Captain. Ordained as a Baptist minister, he attends the Porter Memorial Church.
Mark Metcalf of Lancaster, is the Garrard County Attorney and Prosecutor. He is a graduate of the UK College of Law and serves as a Trustee for the University. Metcalf, a former aide to Congressman Hal Rogers, is also a Captain in the Kentucky National Guard and attends the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.
Ann Ross of Lexington, is a former member of the Lexington-Fayette County Council where she was also elected Vice-Mayor. She served as Deputy Commissioner in the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development from 1992-1996 and is former liaison to President Reagan. Ross is Chairman of the Commission on Women for the United Methodist Church in Kentucky.
We also thank the many volunteers who worked so diligently during the last election.
At the Franklin County Republican Party Mass Convention held in March the registered voters selected a new Executive Committee to serve a four year term (1996-1999).
New officers are: Sallie Clay Lanham, County Chair; Garnett W. Thurman, Jr., Vice-Chairman; James P. Breckel, Secretary; Kay K. Roberson, Treasurer; and James Stuart Victor III, Youth Chairman.
Please congratulate those individuals when you see them and feel free to voice any and all concerns you have to them. We must work together to insure that our voice in government is heard. Ideas from readers can be faxed to 695-7985.
Delegates have already been chosen at the 1996 County-wide Convention, but everyone is encouraged to attend. This will be an important organizational meeting that you will want to attend as we gear up for Election '96. Many issues will be discussed so don't miss your chance to let your voice be heard.
